Course Description

Medical Emergencies

This course is a practical case-based presentation designed to expose the participants to diagnosis and treatment of medical emergencies in the dental office. The course content will be geared to the capabilities of a general dental / hygiene practice. Topics will include creation of an emergency plan, staff responsibilities, communication techniques, emergency medical equipment and appropriate emergency drugs and their use.

  3. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS / AND UNCONSCIOUS PATIENT
  4. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF:

    1. Syncope
    2. Allergic Reaction (Mild)
    3. Angina (Chest Pain)
    4. Postural Hypotension
    5. Seizures
    6. Asthma Attack
    7. Hyperventilation
    8. Reaction to Epinephrine
    9. Hypoglycemia
    10. Cardiac Arrest / MI
    11. Anaphylaxis
    12. CVA

Dr. Bookless’ presentation is didactic lecture using a student handout and PowerPoint presentation.  Case studies will be used to illustrate the diagnosis and treatment of the most common medical emergencies encountered in a dental practice.  The presentation participants will be encouraged to actively participate in the critical treatment decision process.”

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  1. Create an office medical emergency protocol
  2. Describe the basic and specific emergency medical equipment and necessary drugs.
  3. Define the roles of the office staff in an emergency medical situation.
  4. Understand the common medical emergencies encountered in a dental office and their treatment protocols.
  5. Feel more confident and comfortable diagnosing and treating medical emergencies.
