Course Description

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence affects many people in the United States. The term domestic violence includes child abuse, elder abuse, sexual violence and intimate partner violence [IVP]. All healthcare professionals should be alert to the signs of each of these and know the laws governing the assessment and reporting of such abuse. This class will explore the various types of domestic violence, prevention, reporting and support and protection for those victims. There is a special section specifically focused on Kentucky, the laws and special considerations.

The educational teaching methodology used in this Dental CE Course is a self-study course presented via written materials.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

Describe what domestic violence is and the different forms
Explain sexual violence
Present intimate partner violence and its effect on those involved
Discuss child abuse and the reporting of such
Discuss elder abuse and the many types of such abuse
Explain violence in rural areas and the specific difficulties with that
Explain the reporting of abuse and the healthcare professionals role
Describe one intervention for prevention of domestic violence
Understand Kentucky specific laws
