Course Description

Ethics

This class deals with ethical behavior in dentistry and will discuss four different situations that could challenge ethical behavior. Conflict of interest, dual relationships, confidentiality, and impaired colleagues are four common ethical difficulties presented to all those in medical practice. To better understand, the basic principles of ethics are presented as well as the ADA Code of Conduct on those principles.

The educational teaching methodology used in this Dental CE Course is a self-study course presented via written materials. In addition to the information provided, case studies are included to enhance audience members’ understanding and retention of key concepts.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  1. Present the basic principles of biomedical ethics as well as the ADA Code of Conduct on those principles.
  2. Explain conflict of interest and the ethical behavior expected in such instances.
  3. Explain dual relationships and the danger of those relationships.
  4. Define confidentiality in relationship to records, especially the new ruling on patients with SUD.
  5. Discuss the issue of worker impairment in dentistry and the ethical responsibilities.
