Course Description

Pediatric Dentistry

Management of Dental Trauma
Dental trauma covers a wide range of injuries, ranging from enamel infarctions and fractures to more complex injuries involving pulp and periodontal tissues. When such emergencies happen, the dental team needs to be prepared to respond. The treating dentist must make quick decisions to optimize long-term function and esthetics. Dr. Ritwik will provide information on the biologic basis and clinical techniques for management of specific dental injuries in a case-based discussion format. Treatment recommendations based on contemporary dental trauma guidelines and evidence will enable participants to manage traumatic dental injuries in young patients with predictable outcomes.

Contemporary Restorative Options: Minimally Invasive Techniques to Crowns for Primary Teeth
The contemporary management of tooth structure lost from dental caries in pediatric patients ranges from nonsurgical medical management to minimally invasive techniques to traditional restorative techniques such as fillings and prefabricated crowns. There are a variety of prefabricated crowns for pediatric patients that can be used, such as stainless steel crowns, composite strip crowns, pre-veneered esthetic crowns, zirconia crowns, and medical-grade resin crowns. The choice to use each material and technique depends on caries risk, medical status and parental preference.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  1. Diagnose and classify dental injuries.
  2. Evaluate effective and efficient treatment options for the most common dental injuries in primary and permanent teeth.
  3. Determine prognosis and anticipate complications stemming from traumatic dental injuries.
  4. Learn about medical management and minimally invasive options for management of dental caries in pediatric patients
  5. Weigh the pros and cons of different types of crowns for pediatric patients
  6. Learn about techniques to maximize success with contemporary esthetic crowns
