Course Description

Child Abuse

Children may witness or be victims of various forms of maltreatment. The entire dental team needs to be cognizant of the signs of child maltreatment and how to respond to it. Maltreatment may include physical and/or sexual abuse, human trafficking, neglect and/ or emotional abuse. This course will enable participants to recognize the overall signs of child maltreatment as well as the oral / head and neck manifestations. The dental team is required to report suspected child maltreatment to local child protection authorities. This course will provide participants with the framework for documentation and reporting such instances.

This course has not been pre-approved by any state. Please check with your board for specific requirements for license renewal.

The educational teaching methodology used in this course is live, interactive lecture presented via Zoom webinar with an accompanying PowerPoint presentation. Both the live webinar and the PowerPoint presentation incorporate a variety of audio and visual cues to enhance audience members’ understanding and retention of key concepts. In addition, question and answer periods are provided for at the conclusion of each section of the live webinar.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the burden of child abuse and neglect in contemporary communities
  2. Learn about the age groups that are susceptible to the different types of child maltreatment
  3. Understand the clinical signs that lead to suspicion of child maltreatment
  4. Describe the role and responsibility of the dental team in responding to suspected child maltreatment
  5. Outline steps in documenting and reporting child maltreatment
